My daughter Tyler turns 1 this Wednesday which makes me truly feel blessed. In addition, this time of year brings a change of season but brings some amazing holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Channakah and other holidays will be here in the next few weeks. These times are important as we join with loved ones.

Mother Teresa ( 1910 – 1997)
Mother Teresa, whose original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was born on August 27, 1910 in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. For her work with the poor around the world she received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. Her interest in India began when as a child she attended meetings of an organisation known as the Sodality of Our Lady where letters from Yugoslavian priests working in Bengal were read. On 29th November 1928 she joined a religious order and took the name Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later, she began teaching in Calcutta, and in 1948 the Catholic Church granted her permission to leave her convent and work among the city’s poor people. She became an Indian citizen that same year. In 1950, she founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries of Charity. The order provides food for the needy and operates hospitals, schools, orphanages, youth centers, and shelters for lepers and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and 30 other countries. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997.

We have found a rare piece of world and medical history. Jonas Salk was born in New York City. He spent his career as a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. His vaccine was one of the first successful attempts at immunization against a virus, specifically the Poliomyelitis virus. The vaccine provides the recipient with immunity against Polio, and was seminal in the near eradication of a once widely-feared disease. Salk used a “killed” virus technique which required the patient to be injected with the vaccine. The patient would develop immunity to the live disease due to the body’s earlier reaction to the killed virus. Dr. Salk’s vaccine rocked the world in 1954 when he first used it for the general public at Pittsburgh’s Arsenal Elementary School. By contrast, Albert Sabin developed a “live” vaccine which was released in 1961, and which could be taken orally. Unlike some scientists who sought wealth or fame accompanying their innovations, Salk stated “Who owns my polio vaccine? The people! Could you patent the sun?”.

This is  a stunning vintage 8×10 of Bob Dylan posing with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. They were the first of the ‘Super’ groups combining stars of the musical world, and genuine friends, who had each achieved fame with their own musical talents. The Traveling Wilburys began after George’s comeback album; ‘Cloud Nine’ was completed, George had to create a bonus track for the European twelve inch version of ‘When We Was Fab’. Since Jeff Lynne helped in the creation of George’s album, he postponed his other projects: work on Roy Orbison’s album ‘Mystery Girl’, and work on tracks for Tom Petty. The two Englishmen discussed this over lunch in L.A. That Roy was so well versed in the Monty Python genre of British comedy. George was delighted when Roy volunteered to sing with him on the extra track.

“So we went out there to Bob Dylan’s house, sat on the grass and from the germ of an idea that George had on the guitar we wound up writing this song called ‘Handle With Care’.” -Tom Petty

George added what he called ‘a lonely bit’ for Orbison, while Dylan wheezed the trademark harmonica on the fade.

“And so everybody was there and I thought I’m not gonna just sing it myself, I’ve got Roy Orbison standing there. I’m gonna write a bit for Roy to sing. And then as it progressed then I started doing the vocals and I just thought I might as well push it a bit and get Tom and Bob to sing the bridge.” – George Harrison

The next day, Roy left for a one-nighter in Anaheim near Long Beach, Bob continued preparing for a summer tour, and George slipped over to Warner Records with the new tape. Warner rejected the tape, saying that it had too much potential for profit to be hidden under some obscure 12 inch, so George discussed with Jeff, over a quantity of Mexican lager, the idea of cutting a whole LP. When the two skidded up to his house with the plan, Petty jumped at the chance, while over the phone, all they got from Bob was “Yes.” before he hung up. That evening, Jeff, George, Tom and their wives drove down the coast to Anaheim to put it before Oribson who answered,”That’d be great.”

“We watched Roy give an incredible concert and kept nudging each other and saying, ‘Isn’t he great? He’s in our band’ We were real happy that night.” – Tom Petty

The album was completed over the summer of 1988. Most of the composing took place at the house of Dylan’s then producer, Dave Stewart. Nourished by a continuous barbecue, George’s team would plan all afternoon and night.

“We’d assemble after breakfast at about one in the afternoon, and just sit around with acoustic guitars – then someone would have a title or a chord pattern and we’d let it roll.” – George Harrison

Due to Dylan’s upcoming tour, only ten days could be set aside for recording. “We didn’t tell anyone that we were doing it, since if we did, we knew there would be problems.”-Roy Orbison

This is a piece of this history of some of the greatest names in music getting together to do what they do best: create music. This is unsigned but would make an amazing affordable collectors item.

Their 1987 major label debut Appetite For Destruction sold over 28 million copies. I rushed to the car to get the photos I had of them. I used to keep over 3,000 images in my car to get signed if I saw someone famous. Slash was super cool and talked to me for over ten minutes. This is a perfect autograph on an amazing image.

Al Hirschfeld is a child prodigy who grew old but never up. His view of the world around him, particularly the American theater, is as fresh and unique and joyous as ever. He spent more than 75 years attending Broadway plays and sketching the stars for The New York Times and other publications. Full of wit and verve, Hirschfeld’s distinctively bold, curvy line drawings caricatured stars fromGroucho Marx and Ethel Merman through Barbra Streissand and beyond. His first newspaper sketches appeared in the 1920s, and he continued working until his death in 2003. After the 1945 birth of his daughter Nina, Hirschfeld began hiding her name in his drawings, often tucked into hair or shirt folds. Hirschfeld received a special Tony Award in 1975, and another in 1984 as the first recipient of the Brooks Atkinson Award… A 1996 documentary about Hirschfeld, The Line King was nominated for the Academy Award.

This is a rare vintage image of Leonardo DiCaprio. I was in California to collect autographs. At the time, Brian Austin Green was very popular for starring on Beverly Hills 90210. He would throw a party one night each week at a nightclub for the in crowd to go hang out at. I went their to get autographs and all of a sudden Leo DiCaprio walked to the front of the club.
